Kudumbi Seva Sanghom (KSS)
is the largest social organisation representing the
Kudumbi
community in Kerala, working for their social, cultural and educational upliftment.KSS was formed in 1965 with the registered office at
Nanthiatakunnam, North Paravoor, Ernakulam (Dist),
Kerala and the Admin. office at Town Hall cross road, Ernakulam,
Kochi. Kudumbis are traditionally a farmer community .They are konkani speaking linguistic minority in Kerala .The legacy of
Kudumbis
is associated with Kunbi
community of Goa.During the late 15th century, opposing the religious persecution
imposed by the Portuguese in Goa ,kunbis
along with other konkani speaking comunities where forced to migrate from Goa to various parts of Western coast of India which includes the present states like Karnataka,Maharashtra and also Kerala. The kunbis who settled in various parts of Kerala after the migration later came to be known as Kudumbis
Kudumbis
have preserved the konkani language till to this day.Unfortunately its fast dimishing from the ethos of younger generation. In 2009 KSS submitted a representation to the State Govt for providing teaching facilites in schools to learn Konkani.
The State Govt issued an order for the above said demand. Now Konkani is taught in few Govt schools especially around western Ernakulam district where there is a sizable Kudumbi population..
